Abstract

Literacy and Foreign Language Reading. By Tony Ridgway.
When is thought that a student is capable to translate a text and fails, it has to do with Literacy. There has been found several studies about the transferability of first language (L1) reading skills, and strategies to those in second language (L2). Cognitive and behaviouristic theories have been associated to the teaching of reading and writing, setting aside the cultural and historical contexts in which individuals of different societies learn. Scribner and Cole (1981), such as other researchers, found that while there are definite cognitive skills associated with literacy, these ones are dictated by each culture and situation. Any person will have a particular literacy depending on a number of factors, and this will affect attitudes towards texts. So, teachers in the classroom have to be aware of their own attitudes and styles as well as those of their students, if they are looking for understanding and helping them with their foreign language reading.

Wordy sentences

Hello! here we have another exercise pretty similar to the previous one. We have to edit a paragraph in order to make it shorter.I tell you...it was entertaining.
Vista Previa de la imagenEdit the following paragraph to make any wordy sentence as short as possible without changing their meaning. Rule numbers in the margin refer to a appropiate strategies in section 16. The first wordy sentence has been revised for you.
Adam Smith, the moder economics founder, proposed a theory in the eighteenth century that made him controversial. This British economist, born in Scotland and educated in England, published the first complete study of political economy named The Wealth of Nations, in 1776. Smith's book pointed out to the independence of freedom and order, economic processes and free trade laws. His thinking was considerable although did not affect economic policies during his lifetime. Among economists, "the invisible hand" and "laissezfaire"are synonymous with Smith's name. To conservative businesspeople, Smith was a good man who really understood how business works, but to liberal reformers he was totally the opposite. Both reactions are extreme and prove that the controversy aroused by Smith's ideas is still alive.

Reducing Strategies

Hello guys!
This week is about reducing strategies, and here we have two solved paragraphs!
Ver imagen en tamaño completo
This summary must be reduced to 115 words. Watch your professor using the sentence reducing strategies to omit unnecessary words and avoid redundant expressions.
Schenker, in her article "Smart House", in Speak Up 169, accounts for that houses will be networked making people's life easier. The electronic devices will be connected to internet and will have special chips to control different activities like housework, communications, shopping, bills or people's social life. The disadvantages of having a networked home do not seem to be significant. People will just have to pay some dollars for the chips, the connection to internet and to protect the system against cyber pirating. The services will repair themselves. The money that people can spend will not mean much, considering all the smart house benefits.

Monica has sent her summary to the evaluative committee of the magazine "tesol quarterly" to be considered for future publication. However it was sent back because the word limit was 115. Help Monica to reduce it and fullfil the demands of the audience to be accepted.
(1) This study went through over 1,600 marginal and end comments written on 110 first drafts of essays by 47 university ESL advanced students, considering both, the pragmatic goals for and the linguistic features of each comment. (2) Consequently, drafts of each essay were examined to observe the influence of the first draft commentary on the students' revisions and assess if the changes made in response to the teacher's feedback improved the essays. (3) A comments' proportion led to student revision, and particular kinds and forms of commentary were more helpful than others. (4) The results suggested several important implications for L2 writing instruction and for future studies on a vital but neglected topic.

Picture

When I see this picture, I can’t help thinking about the first time I was in a plane; it happened on December like 15 years ago,and it was so early that the Sun was just arising. The plane took off and the first thing I saw was: orange clouds over a dark blue see. It was amazing! I stared at them all the flight that lasted twenty minutes, but I can say that it’s the most perfect view I’ve ever seen!

Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing, is saying someone else’s ideas, but using your own words. We can use synonyms, change the sentence structure, but always have to remember not changing the idea. It’s not that complicated, and to practice we have some exercises here:

Exercise 1. Paraphrase each sentence:

1._ “Despite their massive size, elephants are known for being agile”.
- People know that elephants are agile, even with their massive size.

2._” Because elephants consume up to 500 pounds of food a day, they are able to strip a forest bare in no time”.
- Elephants are able to strip a forest bare in no time because they eat 500 pounds of food a day.

3._” Over the centuries, lions have been used in art to represent power and magnificence”.
- Power and majesty have been represented in art with lions, over the centuries.

4._”Lions are social animals with one dominant male in each pride”.
- In every Lion’s herd, there is a dominant male.

5._”George Washington Carver was a dedicated teacher, in addition, he was known as a talented artist, musician, and researcher who made valuable contributions to his people and his country”.
- The teacher George Washington Carver who was an excellent artist, musician and researcher, made big contributions to his people and country.

6._”Archibald McLeish, known for his poetry, was appointed head of the Library of Congress by President Roosevelt in 1939”.
- The President Roosevelt selected the poet Archibald McLeish to be the head of the Library of Congress in 1939.

Exercise 2. Read each paragraph and state the main idea in your own words:

1._There is plenty of water on the earth. In fact, there is enough water in this planet for everyone to have a huge lake. The trouble is that the water is not always found in the place where it is needed. In addition, much of the water is polluted or salty. Because of these problems, there are many people without sufficient water.

Main Idea: The water crisis on Earth.

2._New oil supplies need to be found to replace those that have been used up. There is a constant search for new oil fields. Oil hunters sink their wells wherever there are signs of oil. Each of these drillings costs thousands and thousands of dollars, and often there is not enough oil to make it profitable. Nevertheless the search for the new oil never ends.

Main Idea: The need of oil fields.
3._Quakers, a religious group known as the Society of Friends, have always worked for human causes. Before the Civil War in the United States, they were against slavery and led the movement to help slaves escape from the southern part of the United States and seek freedom in the northern part. Today, they fight hunger and disease around the globe and still aid people fleeing tyranny and war. Their beliefs are based on the principles of pacifism and simple living.

Main Idea: There is a religious group named Quakers, that have always worked for human causes and it is known as the Society of Friends.

3._ Write a 100 words summary about the text: “Students Rights”.

Why 40 years ago, students stood up and joined together for their rights, and nowadays that is almost impossible to see? It is time for students to wake up and realize that their lives are being directed by other people who do not know about their needs. Students should have the right to participate in the professors’ selection, they should be capable to get the most convenient schedule and, to finish, curriculum planners should not exist. Students are supposed to be allowed to participate in everything concerning to their University, and something has to be done!

Hello guys! this week we have to talk about topics and main ideas, and I found interesting things about it. There is always a topic sentence that usually comes first, but that doesn't mean you are going to find it there all the time, it could be anywhere in the paragraph! We call it "the subject of the paragraph", and we can always recognize it because it gives us a more general information than the other sentences, actually, the other ones give us details about the topic.
To help us a little bit with this, we just have to ask ourselves one question; to identify the topic we could use something like: "what is this paragraph about?"
The main idea is the "key concept" that you can find in the paragraph. As soon as you can define the topic, to find the main idea just ask yourself "What general point does the author want to make about this topic?" and you will get it!
